Tips on how to handle chicken
Fresh Chicken
- Do not keep fresh chicken in the chill fridge for more that 3 days or after expiry date. It
must be frozen or cooked by the expiry date!
- Do not leave fresh chicken sitting in the sun in your car or in the boot for too long after
purchasing.
- In hot weather use an insulated bag or coolbox for transporting chicken home
- Keep chicken away from strong smelling items such as cleaning agents, petrol, blitz,
etc.
Frozen Chicken
- Keep frozen until use - never refreeze thawed out chicken - rather cook it first and then
freeze
- Remove the neck and giblets packet from inside a whole chicken before cooking
Cooked Chicken
- Chicken should stand for no longer than 1 hour at room temperature after cooking -
then it must go into your fridge
- Cooked chicken can be frozen for 2 weeks - thereafter it will dry out
- It is okay to reheat frozen cooked chicken - but not more than once and always until
piping hot
- Never mix cooked chicken with raw chicken
- Left over cooked chicken can be kept in a suitable container in your chill fridge for not
more than 2 days.
Chicken - the healthiest meat for your heart - enjoy!
